What type of knight are you

This is a thread I also started at TOTJO, but it applies here as well; hopefully we can have some good conversations on it here too!

So, this is a thread I have spent some time reflecting on some previous threads that have really helped me grow and wanted to put this out there.

What type of Jedi am I? We all walk different paths, there are some of us whom are counselors, warriors, philosophers, peacekeepers, truth seekers, self improvers. This list could go on for ever and in reality most of us fall into more than one category and so many more.

After reflecting on it and on a statement I believe made by Adder, I have realized on a level, I have become a Samurai like Jedi (in my own mind). I say this because I began practicing martial arts particularly the Korean way of the sword (Koryo Gumdo). As I reflected on this I further took into mind my words and actions and how I see them. Others may see them 100% different but I was looking to classify them. To give myself a title or a devotional, yes I am a human I am going to always try to rationalize my actions and thinking processes. So, with my belief in the Force and it's nature I AM JEDI with my view of the word as weapons and as well weapons as weapons, I AM SAMURAI.

As I continued along this thought it struck me that a great Jedi commented on our avatars and our depiction of them and their meaning to us. Well, I for a while has a character from a show named Jin (pronounced Jean), well there is a great level of significance to that. I relate to the character but in truth it is that Jin is in fact of of the 8 virtues of Bushido.

Benevolence, Compassion (仁 jin)
Through intense training and hard work the true warrior becomes quick and strong. They are not as most people. They develop a power that must be used for good. They have compassion. They help their fellow men at every opportunity. If an opportunity does not arise, they go out of their way to find one.

My goal is to embody this and the oaths I have taken as a Jedi and as an Educator, to meet this goal may be impossible but it may be the most notable thing I may ever do.

So, I ask you my friends as we all walk different paths what Jedi do you see yourself? I ask because I believe though we will all have different answers we will all grow from each other. What more can we ask for that to at least try for that.

Peace, Love and Respect,
Kobos

I kept my post on TOTJO brief, because well, things tend to get over complicated on the forum there hahahaha. I'd like to expand on it a little more here :)

When I read this in your IDP, I loved it. All the mental imagery that comes with both the Samurai and the Jedi is enough to really stir up feelings (perhaps overly romanticized feelings) towards these two topics. However, since I just started reading the Hagakure, I kind of perked up whenever you mentioned this in your post, lol.

From the outset of my path, I have always been the Truth Seeker. Because of this, I think I have been able to go down some roads and explore some things that my previous non-Truth Seeking self would have abhorred. And what an extraordinary journey it's been :) I've made mention elsewhere, so I won't repeat here, but this is the way I have always seen myself on the Path. I think this pursuit has embodied a little bit of everything for me as for as the examples you have given. This is my primary view of the kind of Knight/Jedi I am based on the ones you provided in your post.

What Truth have I come across in this seeking? Well, for starters everyone needs help sometimes, and when one really needs it, they are truly grateful for it. Compassion, Kindness, Joy, and Empathy, these have been my guiding virtues. Here, I'm acquiring more :) but these are my governing ones. Why? Because this is what my truth seeking has taught me. In reality, it might be more accurate to say that I am a Compassionate/Empathetic Knight/Jedi. I strive to mitigate the suffering of others and help out in anyway I can when I'm needed to (and sometimes when I'm not ;) ). This isn't something different from the truth seeking Knight that you referred to, but rather an organic outgrowth of the Journey. Thanks for sharing this with us :)

I guess I'm a counselor sort. I'm the person people come to when they have troubles, and I generally enjoy playing that role.

I also am a nurturer; I make sure people are fed, have what they need, and enjoy being of service in that way ... so.... Mama Jedi, lol?

I consider myself a mix of philosopher and peacekeeper.

I am interested in all sorts of philosophy and am constantly reading. I incorporate new ideas into my path all the time. I do tend to lean on Eastern philosophy and I love Bushido and the Tao, but I also tend to be very Stoic and appreciate Seneca and Aurelius.

As for being a peacekeeper, I tend to seek to resolve issues peacefully. I end up moderating a lot of conversations and deescalating a lot of arguments I witness. I'm not a bad ass law enforcement or military type of peacekeeper, but I really do try to resolve conflict around me. I prefer peace and quiet :).

My focuses at the moment are (Taoist) sagehood, and (Tibetan) buddhahood.

Blending them leads to things like Chan and Zen but the whole effort is wide and far ranging anyway. Previously my whole life had been about the theory side of both warrior and healer, so the amalgam is an interesting blend.

I think I am a teaching or counseling Knight. Possibly even a religious Knight. I enjoy matters of the mind far more than martial aspects. I might train in HEMA, Firearms use, and various hand to hand styles. But I do not enjoy the idea of violence or a fight. It's more something that I sigh and say if I must.

I would rather engage in verbal Judo and avoid it all together if I can. Further, I think that most of the worlds issues could be solved if we took the time to train our youth rather than foisting it off on teachers in a broken public school system. So that is what I dedicate myself to.

I really really really wish more people thought like this.........The school system is for sure fudged up and being inside of it it's real hard to say how we can fix it or if it even can be. In my short experience so far we (educators, particularly in high schools) are left to explain some pretty complex issues of life, drugs, sex, careers, racism, socio-economic status, and the like and whats funny is parents bitch when we touch on them but then their children will ask us because many parents won't honestly answer their questions. Is quite the conundrum and one that puts a lot of students future lively hood at danger as well as teachers career but it almost always comes down to the home and parents. To quote Brother Ali, "I have seen kids from large incomes be worse than the kids that don't have none." because the parents that don't have the money tend to spend more time pushing their children and interacting with them to help get out of poverty or the children themselves are aware of the situation and why their parents are where they are and don't want that for themselves. It is why I am glad I work with the segment of students I do.

Is "Errant" an option?

I wander the wasteland world in search of grails, damsels, and particularly vicious looking windmills.

Honestly? I'm not sure what kind of "knight" I might be. My first inclination is to say I am not a knight at all (at least not yet). Is "reluctant knight" an option? Lol.

Sorry if that doesn't really add to the discussion. :silly:

What kind of a Knight am I?

Honestly, I have no idea.
I know what kind of a Knight I think I am. And I am pretty sure that others have their own ideas based on interactions and impressions.

I have never seen myself as much of a leader, but all my life I have somehow ended up in leadership roles. I know that I don’t have all the answers and am searching for them myself; but, I have “taught” many people over the years. I tend to be cautious but when something needs to be done I have no issue with stepping forward and doing it. Even if I have to go it alone. I try to help those I can. I try to protect those that need protection. I try to keep the peace and I don’t mind ruffling a few feathers if that is what is needed in doing so.

I understand that the better bargaining posture is from the perceived position of power. And that power has the incredible tendency to corrupt. It is important to have pride in ones work but that humility is the stronger adversary.

I believe in spirit of the law as it pertains to man’s law and letter of the law as it pertains to natural law. And that even without knowing what that purpose is, we are all here with a purpose.

I like to think that I am slow to anger and quick to respond; but, I know there are things that just push my buttons and that there are times I feel patience is the best course.

So what kind of knight am I?
I guess I would have to respond with… Human.
:P
