Journeyman Core Lessons in Chemistry

To begin any investigation of the sciences, we must start with the scientific method. Follow the link to the Science Buddies website and familiarize yourself with the scientific method. In your journal, provide a brief explanation of each step. This will be the format we follow for any experimental work and for the research report that we will do at the Master level. If you have any questions, touch base with your mentor.

Go to the Khan Academy’s subject on Chemistry, and complete the subsections listed there beginning with Atoms, Compounds, and Ions. When you have completed a subsection, post a screenshot showing your completion. If you have any questions, touch base with your mentor.

Choose a famous chemist and research them. Why did you pick them? What are they famous for? How have their contributions changed the way we look at Chemistry? Make an entry in your journal detailing what you find.

Choose a famous experiment from an area of Chemistry. Why is it famous? What did it determine? Present the original experiment in your journal, along with your thoughts about it.

The bulk of the journeyman work is in conducting research into a particular area of Chemistry. Choose one of the Chemistry sub disciplines that you are now familiar with and begin researching it. The research will culminate with a research project at the Master Level. Get your research topic cleared with your mentor and when you are ready to start your project touch base with your mentor. Please note, research should include experimental research as well as theoretical and popular material. If you have any questions, touch base with your mentor.

You have come to the end on your Journeyman Level. Touch base with your mentor and present what you have researched and what you plan to do at the Master Level. Moving on is at the discretion of your mentor and they may require more research on your area. When you are given the go ahead, you still be awarded the journeyman designation and you may move on.
