Hey everyone! It's starting to get cooler out and before long winter will be here. There is a local soup kitchen that I volunteer at and I asked them today about what they thought were big needs for the homeless here during winter. They said coats, hats, socks, toiletry items (i.e. hand towels, washcloths, deodorant, soap, disposable razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, combs, and wipes), or any other winter item you can think of. What they collect, they make up little bags to hand out to people and any little bit helps :).

What I would like to do is to have you all send what you want to donate here to my address and I can collect it and deliver it as a group donation on behalf of the Order. I was thinking I would collect through October 15th, that way everyone has about a month to get something to me if they want to make a donation. If anyone has any suggestions, whether about donation ideas or better ways to do this in general, please don't hesitate to let me know.

My address here is 2911 Silverton Court, Columbus, Ohio, 43232.

Let's make our first Order Giving Campaign a success :)

I love this idea! I'll start collecting. I have some clothes to donate, but it is also easy to grab some of the small travel size toiletries each time you go grocery shopping. $10 bucks or so each week over the next few weeks will pay for a lot of stuff they need.

Yes it will :) and I think Wes suggested hitting up Dollar Tree and you can find a ton of items really cheaply. Every little bit helps :)

It's often tough for me to get out of the house; jzen, how would you feel about a monetary donation and then you can use it to purchase some of whatever items might be a bit lacking in the donations?

I think that'll be okay :) I need to check the laws regarding collecting money. Picking up items from multiple people to give to charity is okay, but money falls under a different category. I'll look and get back to you :) If it didn't work out in our current state (the Order not being a registered as a charitable organization yet), we can probably figure something out through Amazon or other online source :) I think cause were not registered, that should make it okay... more to follow, lol

I bought stuff today. I will mail it tomorrow. Will we know what charity these donations go to?

Also, I want to remind people that children's socks and gloves are a thing that is needed too. It's easy to remember adult sizes but no one wants to think of children in need and so often there is a lack of clothing for them. ( I say this from what lacked when I volunteered at a women's center. )

Hatter, The name of the charity is Holy Family Soup Kitchen in Columbus, Ohio. They handle a large portion of the homeless community in Columbus with meals 5 days a week and provide hygiene items and cold weather stuff in the winter time.

That is also a good point to make about the children :) There are quite a few that come there.

Also, feminine hygiene products. I plan on getting mostly toiletries, and those are often forgotten.
