I heard an interesting idea today…

We’ve all seen the different sports stadiums be sponsored by different companies. The AT&T football land arena or what ever. The company pays millions of dollars to have its name on a building that is only used half a year at best.
Let me ask everyone here that drives a serious question. How many of you hate paying tolls? You get taxed all year long for road and bridge maintenance and creation and then the government has the nerve to ask you to pay again for a stretch of road you have paid for time and time again. Why? Because they can’t budget. And the insane amount of corruption in the maintenance divisions of every state.

Why don’t we sell highway and bridge names to corporate sponsorship? Their name would be mentioned a hundred times a day just due to traffic reports. And they can be responsible for maintenance. I bet if AT&T owns a road they would fix a pot hole right away! They wouldn’t want the bad publicity of a traffic report saying that AT&T Bridge is moving at a snail’s pace because of a pot hole.

Of course, having that extra burden may cause them to not want to do it. Maybe make it more attractive by reducing the initial price? But they would not be allowed to place tolls on it as part of the agreement.

This is an interesting concept. As someone who sells sponsorship as part of my job, I could see a lot of value to the right businesses in this. Along with the name being mentioned, there is opportunity to have logos on all of the signage. IT might also work for specific lanes like carpool or FastTrak lanes that are only accessible to certain vehicles.

I think the government would still have to be in charge of maintenance, but the sponsorship dollars could offset a lot of the costs.

I'll have to think on this one more!

What you mentioned about the potholes makes sense but also might be the dealbreaker on that idea , in these uncertain times compagnies are focussed on stability and profit , adopting a bridge could prove to be a risk that they dont want to take.

I am not shooting it down immediately but i have my concerns , this is an idea that i have to ponder over a bit longer but i thought i would share my first idea ;)

While that's a very realistic and probably a very efficient way to handle the problem as opposed to the government one I still would not like it.

The reason for this is that we are innundated with enough commercialism in our lives. I wouldn't want to commute every day and be constantly harrangued to consume some soul-less corporations' latest corn-syrup or processed carbohydrate product, or to have signs flashing that I need to watch some degenerate television show or purchase some mindless app for my soul-sucking cell phone.

I think we get enough of this nonsense on a daily basis.

Instead of out-sourcing the government's responsibility to corporations we need to demand more form our government and hold them responsible. Better yet: Create a new government.
